Disclaimer – I will be quite likely to make regular statements like this is ‘the best’ and ‘my favourite’… I haven’t explored everywhere in Leeds (yet) and just get a bit carried away.
Anyway, I went to Zaap for the first time about a year ago on the recommendation from a friend. I’ve since been back a handful of times and never been disappointed.
You walk in and will be greeted by one of the incredibly friendly members of staff. Whatever time or day I’ve been I have never seen it empty. Whether it’s a Monday evening or a Sunday lunchtime you should always expect a short wait for a table but with a great selection of drinks on offer you can always wait with a Thai beer!
Yesterday, being a Friday evening, it was super busy and we were told the table would be half an hour. We decided to pop a little further up Merrion Street for a cocktail in Pit (why not when they’re 2-4-1).
After a quick drink we timed it perfectly to return to the restaurant and be seated at our table, to the annoyance of a few waiting inside! We are still yet to sit in one of the tuk tuk tables but imagine you need to request them!
For the first timer, the menu might be quite daunting, with such a wide selection and the requirement to read past the Thai writing. Once you’ve worked out where the starters, rice dishes, noodles etc are then it’s more exciting than terrifying!
I’ve previously ordered the chicken massamam curry, which comes served with their trademark sticky rice! The curry is absolutely incredible and like all their food tastes really really fresh.
Yesterday I went for something a little different and tried the crispy belly pork. For only £8.50 you get a very good sized porition of meat, that was cooked to perfection. My only criticism is that with the rice as well it is quite dry. This is a personal criticism however, as I love a lot of sauce on my food, I tend to drown the majority of my meals.
I would absolutely not hesitate in recommending Zaap. A must try, you’ll be sure to return!
As I said at the top, Zaap may not be the best, but it is bloody good. That said, I am always open to trying new places so just let me know where I should try.
